Healthspan optimization is a proactive approach to health that focuses on extending the period of life spent in good health, free from chronic disease and disability. While lifespan refers to the total number of years a person lives, healthspan emphasizes the quality of those years. The goal is to close the gap between lifespan and healthspan, ensuring that a person's healthy, active years are as close as possible to their total years lived.
Key Components of Healthspan Optimization are also important to prevent premature deaths:
The strategies for optimizing healthspan are rooted in a healthy lifestyle and are often the same things that contribute to a longer lifespan. They include:
Diet and Nutrition: why, what, when and how?
Physical Activity: how, when, where and how much?
Sleep: when, and how?
Stress Management: what, when, and how?
Social Connections: what, why, and how?
Preventive Care and Monitoring: Regular non-invasive health check-ups and screenings of pre-clinical symptoms are vital for early detection and management of life threatening diseases.

The Distinction Between HealthSpan and Lifespan:
While lifespan is simply a measure of total years lived, healthspan is about living those years with vitality and independence. For example, a person might live to be 90 (lifespan), but if they experience significant health issues starting at age 70, their healthspan would be 70 years. HealthSpan optimization focuses on maximizing the number of years lived without serious illness or disability.
